surround sound listening & learning sessions, 11am until 6pm

... with some of the world's leading engineers and producers, leaders in this burgeoning (sound)field. Surround sound system courtesy of Genelec.

11 - 11:45am: Jim Hilson of Dolby Labs, with a presentation on how to set up your room to monitor and mix 5.1 surround sound; mixing considerations you will want to know about, etc.

11:45am - 12:30pm: A talk, with audio examples, on the physics and practice of surround recording, by recording engineer and Lexicon chief guru, David Griesinger. Time permitting, we will also hear Lexicon's new Logic 7.

12:30 - 2:00pm: The midday break. See exhibits, compare microphones (see below re Dave Moulton's double-blind tests), and eat lunch nearby--sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, pizza, Japanese, vegetarian, baked goods, etc.

2:00 - 2:45pm: You do it! - an audience-participation surround mixing session with 8-Grammy winning engineer/producer Tom Bates. Don't miss the fun!

2:45 - 3:30pm: Surround recordist Yves Feder will present a selection of his recent concert and session recordings, illustrating ways to produce surround for various instrumentations and spaces, the value of height information, etc.

3:30 - 4:15pm: Based in Washington, D.C., Curt Wittig is a tireless advocate for surround recording, and a master practitioner. He will bring a selection of recent work, and will discuss the lessons they teach.

4:15 - 4:45pm: Afternoon break.

4:45 - 5:30pm: Major labels have been bringing more and more surround projects to Gateway Mastering in Portland for Bob Ludwig to master. Bob will present and discuss some of them.

5:30 - 6:00pm: "And now for something completely different," by David Moulton, who will play a sketch drawn from works in progress. They will "suggest another way of thinking about surround."

If his work allows, Tom Jung of DMP will come again this year, bringing recent surround work for us to hear.

double-blind subjective listening tests with David Moulton, 11am until 5pm

A 20-minute experience in critical listening, through headphones, comparing microphones. See if you can guess which is which. The results--evaluating the mics, not the listeners!- -will form the basis for an AES/Boston meeting in early 1999. It will concern the predictability of such subjective evaluations, in terms of the language used to describe what we hear-warmth, brilliance, etc.

Dave is the noted author, acoustician, loudspeaker designer, teacher, and creator of the Golden Ears CD series. His courses at Parsons-in Critical Listening, Golden Ears, Fundamentals of Audio, Mixing Techniques, and Acoustics for Musicians-are excellent professional development; lucid instruction for audio workers of all levels, and a lot of fun in a solid learning experience. Have you taken one yet?

Bob Ludwig of Gateway Mastering speaks about his work, 7-9pm.
