FACULTY

Dave Moulton photo

David Moulton is the Center's "Dean" and a principal faculty member. And he really is — as the front page of the Boston Globe put it — an audio guru. He is a long-time master teacher, noted author, Grammy-nominated recording engineer, composer, creator of the industry-standard audio ear training CD’s (the Golden Ears series), and a co-creator, with Bang & Olufsen, of one of the finest loudspeakers on Earth: the BeoLab 5.

A graduate of Bard College and the Juilliard School of Music, he has served as Chairman of the Music Production & Engineering program at Berklee, and the Sound Recording Technology program at SUNY/Fredonia. He has taught at Berklee, SUNY, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Emerson College, Full Sail, and elsewhere. He is a regularly published author of articles for Recording and TV Technology magazines, as well as Total Recording, a comprehensive 500-page textbook. He has recorded numerous artists, and handled sound reinforcement for many others. He is Vice President of Sausalito Audio LLC, and at present is working hard on extremely high-performance in-wall and in-ceiling digital loudspeakers for home theater.  He also serves as a Trustee for the New England Institute of Art and a Director for Indian Hill Music.  By the way, for a photo and description of his studio, Moulton Labs, which we use for a number of courses, see below.

Dave bears his accomplishments gracefully. As his many students have happily discovered, he is a generous and gifted teacher, devoted to their interests and well-being.  He’s got game, humor and in his old age he’s getting positively silly about high performance cars.  Just ask him!

Tom Bates photo

Tom Bates is not only an extraordinarily experienced engineer and producer, but he is the kind that others aspire to be. He has recorded major artists in all genres, including rock, pop, jazz, classical, and opera. And he is still doing it! Eight of his projects have won Grammies. He has been audio director of several Emmy-winning television shows, including "Saturday Night Live", "Live From Lincoln Center", and "Live From The Met"; and Academy Award-nominated movies, including Franco Zeffirelli's film of "La Traviata", starring Placido Domingo and Teresa Stratas. He has also mixed live performances for many artists. He was a co-founder of TimeLine, Inc. and a co-designer of the Lynx synchronizer module. He has acted as a technical design consultant for leading American and Japanese equipment manufacturers.

Tom excels in every aspect of audio design, recording, and reproduction. A digital audio pioneer, he has always worked on the cutting edge. As demonstrated in his popular presentations at Parsons Audio’s annual Expos, he is a fascinating teacher. Vibrant and informative, he draws freely from his immense experience.

Alex Case is an Assistant Professor of Sound Recording Technology at the University of Massachusetts. An active member of the Audio Engineering Society (http://www.aes.org), and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (http://asa.aip.org), Case is an engineer, educator, and author who speaks frequently on audio and acoustics across the United States and internationally. With degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Music, and Acoustics, Professor Case lives and works at the intersection of art and science.

His research and professional activities focus heavily on the technical foundations, creative motivations, and aesthetic merit of recording and signal processing techniques used in multitrack production. Case is a widely published author, with over 100 articles appearing in multiple journals. He has written the unique and authoritative guide to audio signal processing in multitrack production entitled Sound FX – Unlocking the Creative Potential of Recording Studio Effects, (http://www.focalpress.com/Book.aspx?id=1088) published by Focal Press (http://www.focalpress.com), an imprint of Elsevier Science.

In addition to his undergraduate and graduate teaching, Case gives many invited lectures across the U.S. in such prestigious programs as Berklee College of Music (where he was, for many years, a member of the adjunct faculty), Emerson College, New England Institute of Art, New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and internationally at locations including the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, Fermatta Academy of Music in Mexico City, the SAE Institute in Milan, Italy, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China.

Active in the Audio Engineering Society, Case was chair of the Boston Section for two terms, serves its Executive Committee, has led multiple regional meetings, and instructed several standing-room only tutorials at the International Conventions. In 2005, Case was honored to be made one of the youngest Fellows of the Acoustical Society of America, recognizing his leadership in the field of acoustics, particularly as an educator. He also serves as a member of ASA’s Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics (currently secretary to that committee), and has been an invited contributor of more than a dozen papers.

Case holds a M.S. in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, a B.M. in Music Production and Engineering from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas. Case lives with his bride in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Doser

Brian Doser has taught Pro Tools widely. For years, using Pro Tools, and advising and instructing Pro Tools users, has been his day job. For a decade, he has been Digidesign’s Northeast Regional Product Specialist and Sales Representative. Before that, he was Audio Engineering Manager for WERS-FM at Emerson College, in Boston; he was also an instructor in audio production there. He has engineered at numerous recording studios, including The Village Recorder in West L.A. He is an expert Pro Tools user—up-to-date on the system itself, and on the broad array of third-party hardware accessories and software plug-ins that it supports. At the Parsons Center for Audio Studies (PCAS), Brian teaches the Accelerated version of Pro Tools 101, and the Pro Tools 110: Essentials of Pro Tools course. He's certified to teach all levels of official Pro Tools courses, and periodically teaches 300 level courses. By the way, Brian is a graduate of the Tonmeister Studies program at SUNY, where he studied under David Moulton. These things go full circle!
Dosers

Scott Elson, an adjunct faculty member at PCAS (for the course in Mastering with Your Pro Tools System), is an in-demand mastering engineer and music producer. He co-owns and operates Acadia Recording Company in Portland, Maine, where he provides audio engineering and record production services to a growing collection of talented artists. Scott also founded the label Habitat Entertainment to help artists successfully navigate the record production process and effectively manage their creative products. Before opening his own studio, Elson was a staff engineer at Gateway Mastering & DVD, a world-class mastering facility built by legendary engineer Bob Ludwig. There, he worked with many of the entertainment industry's best known artists, engineers and producers. His duties initially consisted of quality control and digital editing, but he was soon assisting Ludwig in daily mastering sessions and ultimately began taking on his own mastering projects and clients. Scott's credits range from major artists such as Queen to independent acts such as the Bleedin Bleedins. An honors graduate from Berklee College of Music, Scott was a Berklee Entering Student Talent scholarship winner and guitar principal. He graduated from the Music Production and Engineering program and was awarded the MP&E Creativity Scholar Award. Scott also holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech.

ABOUT MOULTON LABS

Moulton Laboratories, David Moulton's studio in Groton (MA), is the location of several PCAS courses. It provides a quite luxurious and extremely comfortable experience. The control room has been steadily refined over its twelve years and now boasts a fully developed HD system with 24 bit, 96 kHz. digital audio all the way from the Pro Tools platform to the BeoLab 5 monitors. In addition, a screening-room quality 90” HD video projection system has been installed, which permits greatly enhanced teaching and visuals. A sunroom/lounge plus a beautiful stone terrace and waterfall make this a great place to visit and work. For a few more photos, look here.
