1. David Moulton's audio classes to begin September 26

David Moulton's popular audio courses will resume here on Thursdays beginning September 26. There's a lot to say about that, so we have sent a separate e-mail on the subject. Educational outreach is a key aspect of our business. We like to do all we can to help our customers learn, and we know of no one better able to provide that education than Dave Moulton. Anyone who has taken his courses, or read his articles in Recording Magazine and TV Technology, would agree. You can find details at the Learning section of our web site, http://www.paudio.com.

2. Digidesign event, 7pm, August 28, focusing on the new 002

Digidesign next event will happen in the Parsons Audio showroom at 7pm, August 28. It will focus on the new 002. The 002 is a FireWire-based Pro Tools system designed for both recording and performing musicians. It combines Digidesign control surface and FireWire technologies with analog, digital and MIDI I/O, 24-bit/96 kHz clarity, and 32-track Pro Tools LE software. It will be available for either Windows XP or Mac OS. Its FireWire interface readily lends itself to laptop or desktop computers. Additionally, at the push of a button, Digi 002 enters Standalone mode and becomes an 8x4x2 digital mixer, complete with EQ, dynamics, effects and snapshots (Pro Tools is disabled).

The system MSRP is $2495. It will be available Q3 2002. Our product specialists can inform you further about it, or show you a demo. For more info, and other Digi news, visit http://www.digidesign.com/diginews/7-02/digi002.

3. for DVD authoring and DTV broadcast: Dolby's DP564 Multichannel Audio Decoder

Dolby's next generation reference decoder supports all Dolby surround sound formats, and includes comprehensive monitoring tools. Multiple digital inputs, LTC output, and Ethernet port, for streaming and remote control. The front panel provides easy setup and metering, master volume control, and a Dolby headphone output for monitoring surround sound on headphones. For more info, contact Parsons Audio, and visit http://www.dolby.com/DP564.

4. free Yamaha PM-1D training days, in Boston on October 30 & 31

Yamaha is touring the U.S. with a free two-day training session based around their PM-1D Digital Audio Mixing System. The tour will be in Boston on October 30 and 31. Yamaha will provide training materials, breakfast, and lunch each day. To sign up, e-mail michimura@yamaha.com. In your e-mail, please indicate whether your principal area of interest is broadcast, touring, theater, church, mobile truck, etc.

The PM-1D is a natural evolution of Yamaha's PM Series consoles, and is a product of the company's more than 20 years of success designing and building digital mixers and consoles. It includes a comfortably familiar work surface, intuitive software, flexible multi-format I/O, extensive on-board effects, complete parameter recall, hundreds of scenes, seamless redundancy, surround sound, time code, and excellent sonic performance. PM-1D's are at work every day in broadcast facilities, mobile units, concert halls, sports arenas, houses of worship, touring sound, etc..

This training session is a chance for you to get on track with this up-to-date technology.

5. for sale to Sonic Solutions owners: bargain HD system, and HD-IO/96kHz

As you may know, a spin-off of Sonic Solutions is trying to breathe life into that manufacturer's long-impaired HD workstations. We still own a demo HD workstation. It is good for some purposes, and not for others. Many facilities around the world -- especially mastering facilities -- use it as their principal or only DAW; in many settings, it is a great music editor. If you are interested in owning it, understand its strengths and liabilities, and have a use for it, we are selling ours for whatever Best Offer arises. Would you like to make an offer? Our system consists of:
= an HDSP Processor card (Assy #751000, SN 40046 Rev A)
= an HD3 I/O (SN 1596 Rev G)
= the associated boxes, cables, (outdated) software and manual

We also own a demo HD-IO/96kHz clock box, Model #702931/K, SN 1222 Rev F. For sale for Best Offer.

6. Surround seminar at Hartt School

Mike Sokol will discuss and demonstrate surround sound production at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, at 6pm on September 18. Details can be found at http://uhaweb.hartford.edu/musicprod/sokolevent0902.htm.

Apple buys Emagic
***************
It's a fact, sure to have an impact on our industry: On July 1, Apple announced their acquisition of Emagic.

Lenore Fauliso joins Parsons
***********************
Lenore Fauliso has joined the Support Staff at Parsons Audio. She will be working primarily in support of our Rick Scott. Lenore is a stellar graduate of Boston College and the New England Institute of Art & Communications. She replaces Claire Steger, who is moving on to Berklee. There, Claire will manage the Synth Lab -- no doubt with as much skill and grace as she displayed during her years at Parsons. We wish her well!

We have a PDF of the invitation; will send it to you, if you wish.

New from Dolby at NAB will be:

DP564 Multichannel Audio Decoder. Dolby’s next generation reference decoder for applications from postproduction to DVD authoring and DTV broadcast. The DP564 decodes and monitors Dolby Digital, Dolby Surround, and PCM soundtracks, and also offers Dolby Digital Surround EX, and Dolby Surround Pro Logic II decoding. Advanced features include two AES inputs, an optical input, linear timecode (LTC) output, large front-panel display and user controls for easy setup and metering, a master volume control; plus, there’s a Dolby Headphone processor for monitoring surround sound with regular headphones. The DP564 will be available in the summer 2002, at a list price of $5,000.

LM100 Broadcast Loudness Meter. “Set and forget the volume.” Specifically developed for broadcast applications, the LM100 is the first stand-alone product capable of accurately measuring subjective program loudness using the equivalent loudness method LAeq. The unit also functions as a low-cost, two-channel Dolby Digital and Dolby E decoder for quality-assessment purposes. Applications for the LM100 include cable head-end facilities, network origination centers, direct broadcast satellite facilities, turnaround uplinks, and postproduction facilities. The Dolby LM100 will be available in autumn 2002, at a list price of $2,995.

late January 2002 NEWS

• Digidesign news & Pro Tools HD event (Feb. 12)
• Voyager Sound demonstration, Feb. 6
• misc. product news and links

These days, as always, new technology is being born. Last week's NAMM show, and the AES exhibits in December, brought a good amount of it to view. We attended both events. Here are some details, with Web links to more. We have info here at Parsons Audio, and (in many cases) demos in our Showroom. Also, two interesting product events are coming to our Showroom during the next few weeks.

Digidesign event & news

The Digidesign HD Pure Tour will visit our Showroom on Tuesday, February 12 at 4pm & 7pm. Digidesign, in the person of Brian Doser, will be here to show the new HD system to you, and to answer your questions. RSVP.

Digidesign's new Pro Tools HD system (http://www.digidesign.com/diginews/1-02/hd.html) should be in our Showroom by the time you read this. If you're interested, come try it, or have our staff demo it for you. Highlights include a new architecture that supports higher sampling rates (up to 192kHz), higher track count and I/O capacity, expanded routing flexibility, new high resolution interfaces (it also supports legacy interfaces), a new synchronization peripheral, a new mic preamp peripheral, a new MIDI interface, and more. Digidesign offers an upgrade program for owners of legacy systems. We have details.

If you purchase a Pro Tools HD 1, HD 2 or HD 3 system from us by March 31, you are eligible to receive a FREE bundle of TDM plug-ins from Digidesign, Bomb Factory, Focusrite, and many more. A value of up to $4900.

You can find much more about the new products in Digidesign's latest newsletter, which just came out. If you would like to read it, ask us to forward you a copy. Just reply to this message, with your request. You can subscribe to the newsletter, if you want.

Voyager Sound demonstration.
In our Showroom on Wednesday, February 6 at 4pm & 7pm, Voyager Sound (http://www.voyagersound.com) will present their GraphiMix mixing software. RSVP.

Voyager is a group of Boston-area audio and computer engineers who have developed an intriguing graphical interface that controls digital mixers. At $129 (Windows only), GraphiMix 01 enables you to use a Yamaha ProMix 01 or 01V to construct a mix visually, in stereo or multi-channel surround sound. By manipulating graphic icons with a mouse or similar input device, you can control gain, pan, and effects. You can control up to 16 linked MIDI-compatible audio mixers. The on-screen soundfield is user-definable, with image or text icons (your choice) representing mix elements. Controls can be grouped. Applications include post audio, film audio, stereo or surround audio, and live. GraphiMix 01 is the first of a series of products. Voyager reports that users of other MIDI-compatible consoles (by Tascam, Behringer, Mackie, etc.) can easily adapt GraphiMix.

More news, screen shots, and a downloadable demo are available at the Voyager Sound web site. The demo package includes "a MIDI mixing application where a MIDI sequencer, the Voyager Sound GraphiMix system, and a MIDI utility can be combined to create a live, on-line, graphic mix system for MIDI composition and playback. Also: "a sound generation and effects demo which creates a ‘MIDI Theremin’ electronic musical instrument….”

On February 6, see the presentation at Parsons Audio.

Digidesign news and event

As of next week's NAMM Show in Los Angeles, there will be significant product news from Digidesign. We can't tell it to you yet. However, on next Thursday, the 17th, at 4pm and 7pm, Brian Doser of Digidesign will be here to tell all. There will be a followup session on Tuesday, February 12, at 4pm and 7pm. If you'd like to come to any of the events, no RSVP needed. If you're curious but can't come, contact us; we'll give you a full report.

new Yamaha console: DM2000

After years as the digital audio production standard, 16-bit/44kHz is giving way to 24-bit/96kHz. As you may have read in the current MIX magazine (the Technology Spotlight on p.139, by George Petersen), Yamaha has now progressed from the legendary 02R to a remarkable new 24/96 console called the DM2000. The DM2000 will be available in a few months, priced for less than $20,000. We will introduce it to New England with a series of roll-out events, which we hope you will attend. We won't elaborate much about it for now. If you're interested, look at http://yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gRMC00008DM2000. We will mention a feature set that will prove especially useful to Pro Tool users, however. To quote Yamaha: "Extensive support for Digidesign's Pro Tools™ system provides full control of mixing and processing parameters, as well as transport/track-arming control and access to editing functions, directly from the DM2000 control surface."

Yamaha M2500 & M3000 test drives

Anyone interested can take advantage of Yamaha's "test drive" program for M2500 and M3000 mixers. Demo stock is available for you to buy (at discounted prices) as well to evaluate.

Moulton exhibition, Jan. 9 - Feb. 10

Through his courses at Parsons Audio and elsewhere, his lectures, his book, his magazine articles, his generous participation in our Expos, and more, David Moulton has done a lot for the professional audio community. Today, January 9, something new is emerging. It promises to intrigue us not just as music, but also as a debut of the loudspeakers that he has been developing for the past twenty years.

Here's the press release:

Boston Sculptors Collaborative to Host A Gift of Sound, Sound Sculptures by David Moulton.

Opening January 9, 2002, the Boston Sculptors Collaborative at Chapel Gallery in Newton will host A Gift of Sound, an exhibition of sound sculptures by composer David Moulton, using revolutionary high-end loudspeakers of the artist’s own design that surround the listener with with an expanding virtual space not limited by wood, brick and stone.

"These sound sculptures are large, 3-dimensional sound constructs that evolve over time," Moulton said in an interview at his studio in Groton, MA.  "Imagine that you are sitting ‘within’ a huge sound source, a musical, physical source which envelops you as it pulls you along.  That sensation of immersion is at the core of these works.  It is surprisingly beautiful and moving, and speaks in a new way to our emotional core.”

The featured piece will be Moulton’s  September 11, 2001, an elegiac work that the composer calls, "A Prayer And Meditation To Witness And Mourn The Dead From September 11."  Four additional works will also be presented, including Morning Etude and Night Etude, as well as Lauds, from Moulton’s Book of Hours project.

Moulton’s loudspeakers, developed over 20 years, are essential to the experience.  "Loudspeakers are actually musical instruments," Moulton commented.  "I’ve tried to make them sound really musical. So, it turns out that I’m building the instrument as well as composing the music for it."

The six loudspeakers will be arranged in a periphonic array with five on the horizontal plane and one overhead.  "The overhead channel gives the sense of ‘height’ to the sound," Moulton explained.  The loudspeakers are being specially built for this exhibit by Sausalito Audio Works, of Novato, CA.  Their revolutionary patented Acoustic Lens Technology (ALT) yields a sound field of unprecedented richness and depth.  ALT is also licensed to Bang & Olufsen of Denmark, a premier builder of loudspeakers.

David Moulton is a composer, acoustician, recording engineer, author and teacher.  He has degrees from Bard College and the Juilliard School of Music, where he studied with Vincent Persichetti, Jacob Druckman, Luciano Berio and Roger Sessions.  He has taught at the State University of New York, Berklee College of Music, UMass Lowell and is currently teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  He maintains a studio/laboratory in Groton, MA., and he is author of "Total Recording" and "Golden Ears," two highly acclaimed educational publications created for the recording industry.  In 2000, Moulton was nominated (along with Curt Wittig) for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Recording.  For more information about David Moulton and his work, contact www.moultonlabs.com.

A Gift of Sound will run from January 9 to February 10, 2002. Contact Sean MacLean at (617) 232-1906 or SeanMacLean@Earthlink.Net for additional information.
