1. Product specialists visiting Parsons Audio: Digidesign, SADiE, Dolby
2. Pro Tools training course dates at the Center for Audio Studies
3. new product line: Soundelux microphones
4. Kurzweil discounts

1. Manufacturer product specialists at Parsons Audio the next few weeks will include:

a. Digidesign. Tuesday, May 20, at 4 & 7PM, Brian Doser, our regional Digidesign Product Specialist, will be in the Demonstration Room presenting Pro Tools. FYI, the 002 now supports v.6.0.2 software; available through Digidesign's online store.

b. SADiE. Tuesday & Wednesday, May 27 and 28. Contact us to make an appointment. SADiE is a highly evolved PC-hosted workstation. Powerful DSD capabilities, high sample rates, etc.

c. Dolby (date correction). Jim Hilson, Dolby's Senior Broadcast Product Specialist, will be here Tuesday to Thursday, June 3-5. (Our prior e-mailing said July.) He would like to visit any facilities interested: TV stations, post houses, etc. Contact us to arrange.

2. Course dates for this summer's Pro Tools training courses

If you have signed up for this summer's Pro Tools training courses at the Parsons Center for Audio Studies, or plan to, we now have exact times and dates.

For Pro Tools: Getting Started, they are Monday through Friday, July 21-25; five three-hour classes, from 7-10PM. If you're interested in the course but haven't yet signed up, it's a powerful, comprehensive introduction to Pro Tools. It was developed in recent years by Lauren Weinger, who teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has taught this course to hundreds of students at the Museum School, NYU, MIT, RISD, and elsewhere.

Pro Tools for Pros, for intermediate and advanced Pro Tools users, will take place Monday through Friday, August 18-22; five three-hour classes, from 7-10PM. Taught by Brian Doser, Digidesign's Northeast Regional product specialist. Prerequisite -- Pro Tools: Getting Started, or permission of the Center.

The Summer Session courses are starting to fill up, even though we have barely begun to get the word out about them. Class sizes are limited to twelve. There are five courses. They include the two Pro Tools courses, above; also Golden Ears Audio Ear Training, and Principles of Audio for Professionals, both taught by David Moulton, and Growing Your Personal/Project Studio, taught by Tom Bates. See details in our prior e-mailing, or at the web site. We have a an 8-page brochure, which mirrors the info on our web site. Request one, if you'd like.

3. New at Parsons Audio: Soundelux microphones

We now stock a full array of Soundelux microphones. They're extraordinary. After years of listening and researching modern alternative materials, Soundelux has developed a combination of mic electronics and acoustics that captures the essence of top vintage studio mics.

Says David Bock of Soundelux: "With studios and artists demanding vintage microphones, buyers are often stymied as to why they cost so much to own and maintain. We are attempting to build the first 'family' of vintage tone microphones that work as a team and are affordable as a group. We're responding to a big vacuum in the market, where vintage mics keep increasing in value, yet their reliability in a real studio setting is decreasing. Someone needed to restore these older proven sounds to the studios of today, maybe improve the noise and top end a little, while making them affordable and reliable."

We have several dozen fine microphones on display in our Demonstration Room. Visit us to see and discuss them, or to borrow one for evaluation.

4. Kurzweil B-stocks

Available now, at 20-25% off the usual, to first comers: K2600, K2600S, K2600X, K2600XS, SP-88, PC-2X0.

The CENTER for AUDIO STUDIES

May 2003

Do you have gaps in your knowledge of audio? Do you want to do better work for yourself and your clients? (Who can answer No to those questions?) Where do you want to be, in your work, a year from now? What role can effective education and training play for you?

To help some with those matters, we have established the Center for Audio Studies. Its Summer 2003 Session will begin on July 8. "Training for professionals, taught by masters," describes the program in brief. The Center expands our continuing education offerings of recent years, particularly the courses that master teacher David Moulton has taught: Golden Ears, Critical Listening, and Fundamentals of Audio. Audio/media professionals who have taken those courses or attended the instructive sessions -- by David, Tom Bates, and others -- at our annual Expo have been asking us for more "training for professionals." We thought we'd oblige.

In addition to Dave, we have added several stellar faculty members: Tom Bates (of the 8 Grammies and multiple Emmies), Lauren Weinger (of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and Brian Doser of Digidesign.

Courses this summer will include:

Golden Ears Audio Ear Training
Principles of Audio for the Professional
Growing Your Personal/Project Studio
Pro Tools: Getting Started
Pro Tools for Pros: Intermediate/Advanced

These courses will take place in the evening, mostly on consecutive evenings -- five-day or (advanced Pro Tools) ten-day intensives.

That's for starters. In addition to encores of some of those courses, more will come in our Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 sessions. Also, in the Spring of 2004, all 2003-4 students will be invited to attend a free seminar in Career & Professional Development, with presentations by the staff, and in-depth discussion. A major point of this enterprise is to improve skills, raise audio quality, and advance careers.

Our web site describes the program in detail. Or you can contact our staff about it. If you would like to discuss what course(s) might suit you best, we will be happy to do that. We'll put you in touch with David Moulton, our "Dean."

Class sizes are limited to twelve, by the way. A number of the classes already have people enrolled in them, so don't delay enrolling too long!

If you would benefit, we hope you'll try a course or two...or three or four.

If you're a station or other facility in Boston, Providence, Hartford/Springfield, etc., you might like to learn more. Jim is knowledgeable, understandable, and down to earth. (You may have seen his presentations at our Expos.)

4. Apple Computer: the iPod

As you may know, the Apple Music Store is off and running, making 200,000+ songs downloadable over the Internet; adding thousands more every week. More than a million songs were sold (99¢ each; about $10/album) in its first week. Apple also sold almost 200,000 iPods during the week--it's a great way to listen! We're an Apple Computer reseller, so please contact us if you're interested. (Also new this week: new eMacs, including a 1GHz/17"/G4/Superdrive version.)

5. The Center for Audio Studies

FYI, the Summer Session courses are starting to fill up, even before we get the word out about them. Class sizes are limited to twelve. See details in our separate e-mailing, or at the web site

March 2003: NY Times story re future of CD

In the Circuits section of today's New York Times, there's an informative story re the present and future of high quality music recordings -- as CD's (especially as SACD and DVD-A), surround in cars, etc. If you would like to read it, it is in the online as well as paper NYT: click here.

The story describes a "second front...in the music counterrevolution." (MP3, etc. represents the well-known, low-resolution first front.) If you attended the evening discussion at last year's Expo, you may recall much discussion of this topic among Tom Bates, Bob Ludwig, David Moulton, and Dr. Toby Mountain. (See report at our site.) The story cites the Rolling Stones' 22-album hybrid stereo SACD project that Bob remastered last year; describes it as pivotal encouragement to the business of high quality recording.

Parsons Audio events

This coming Wednesday, March 12, at 4 & 7pm, Brian Doser of Digidesign will be in our Demonstration Room to present Pro Tools 6.0 -- System X compatible, etc. For current Pro Tools owners and operators, he will also be here on Wednesday, March 19 (4 & 7pm sessions) for a Pro Tools User Group Meeting. Space is limited, so RSVP. If you cannot attend, we can demo Pro Tools 6.0 for you, with System X, on almost any day. Contact us to make an appointment.

Pro Tools exchange program & promotion

If you own an older Digidesign system and would like to upgrade to the latest, Digidesign has a program this month that can help. For details, contact us, or visit Digidesign's <http://www.digidesign.com/exchange/>Pro Tools Hardware Exchanges page. Also, dramatic promotions are under way that provide free hardware and plug-ins to buyers of the new HD systems. We have details, or you can follow links on Digidesign's <http://www.digidesign.com>home page. Both programs end on March 31.

Apple Computer

We now have our new Apple G4 Macintosh (the dual 1.25 GHz) and 20" Cinema Display in our Demonstration Room. We sell the entire Apple product line, and can provide advice, info, pricing, etc.

Many of our DAW customers have complained about their noisy G4's. Now, Apple's Power Mac G4 Power Supply Exchange Program offers owners of Power Mac G4 computers the option of reducing the operating acoustic level of their computers by exchanging their original power supplies and system fans for new, quieter versions. Participation in the Power Supply Exchange Program is optional. The program ends June 30, 2003. For more information, <https://depot.info.apple.com/generic/index.html>click here.

Heard about Apple's new $299 Final Cut Express? It is a versatile, approachable, and affordable non-linear editing application for expressive video content creation. It includes a robust set of editing, compositing, titling, effects and audio tools. It works with most popular Firewire-enabled DV cameras and decks. It shares the same intuitive, drag and drop interface as the Emmy-award winning Final Cut Pro. And it offers easy output to DVD, Tape or Web.

Yamaha's new PM5000 console

Yamaha has announced that it will release a new mixing desk, the PM5000, in July. The new desk will retain the layout and ergonomics of its well-known predecessor, the PM4000, while providing a number of features offered by the company's PM1D digital mixing desk.

Bargains

We're doing a pre-Spring housecleaning here. We are finding items that we will sell at special low prices. A complete list will be available soon. Among early items of note is our demo SADiE Artemis system. Normally over $11,000, we are selling it for under $9,000. If you are interested in it, please contact us.

For current Pro Tools owners and users, a user group meeting will happen here on Wednesday, March 19, also at 4 & 7pm. It, too, will focus on 6.0. RSVP.

With an HD3 system, for instance, you'll receive a free Amp Farm, Bruno/Reso, d2, d3, D-Fi, Maxim, PitchDoctor, and Reverb One. We have details.

2a. Apple Computer: Could you benefit from a high quality display?

Some of the biggest audio/media-related news around here lately has been from Apple Computer. Major news has come on two fronts: displays, and the computers themselves.

If you work with software, we have a notion to tempt you with. It won't cost you much! Do you remember how dramatically your audio monitoring improved when you started using higher-resolution monitor speakers--by Genelec, Meyer, etc.? An equivalent pleasure awaits you in Apple's line of flat-panel LCD computer displays. As with higher quality speakers, once you use the new LCD models, you won't want to go back to using a CRT. The difference between the two, as more than one of our customers have put it, is "night and day."

It's not just a matter of your pleasure. It's a matter of value: better brightness, contrast, and sharpness; color range, consistency, and uniformity; lack of flicker; immunity from magnetic interference; wide viewing angle; and support for dual displays. You will see differences in clarity, detail, accuracy, and speed and ease of use. Plus, the design of the displays is stunning.

To see for yourself, look at the Displays page at the Apple Computer web site. Better yet, see the Apple Displays: Technology Overview, January 2003, which makes a compelling case. (You owe it to yourself!) Or come see the new 20" Apple Cinema Display in our Demonstration Room. Last week, Apple came out with the new 20" model, and dramatically dropped the prices of the other two. The Apple Studio Display (17" diagonal; a 21" equivalent workspace) costs $699; the Apple Cinema Display (20") costs $1,299; and the the Apple Cinema HD Display (23") costs $1,999.

2b. Apple: new, quieter Macs, etc.

The new dual-processor Power Macs offer distinctly better performance with most DAWs. They include the $3299 dual 1.42GHz with 512MB of DDR SDRAM, a 120GB internal hard drive (180GB available), a SuperDrive (to burn CD's and DVD's), etc. Also, for $2499, you can buy a new dual 1.25GHz with 256MB of DDR SDRAM, an 80GB hard drive, a Combo Drive (DVD/CD-RW), etc. If you would like to see the dual 1.25, we will soon have one in our Demonstration Room. You'll be glad to hear that both models are acoustically much quieter than their predecessors.

For a more portable system, there are two new PowerBooks: a 1GHz with 17" screen and SuperDrive, for $3299, and an 867MHz with 12" screen, for $1799. There has been a speed bump and price drop on iMacs, too. On the software front, among other news, Final Cut Express is a new, potent sub-set of Final Cut Pro, for $299. For more details about all Apple products, visit the Apple web site, or contact us.

3. Nuendo

2.0 software will ship in mid-March. For a Nuendo demo, contact Jon Day here at Parsons. For more details, visit the Nuendo site.

4. SADiE

SADiE's new Series Five workstations are coming soon. They will include 4- and 8-channel PCM systems, supporting 96kHz/24bit audio, and 2- and 8-channel DSD mastering and authoring systems. Details at the SADiE web site, or contact us. Also, in case you're interested, we have a full Artemis demo system available at a bargain price.

5. Golden Ears Audio Ear Training Seminar, February 27, 7pm

The second winter session of David Moulton's Golden Ears Seminar is sold out. We will offer more sessions, along with an array of other courses, starting this summer. Details will follow soon.

********************************
Reminder that Martin Dombey of Yamaha will be in our Demonstration Room tomorrow from 6:30-8:30pm. He will focus on Yamaha's DM2000 digital console. We have found that, among many other uses, the DM2000 is popular as a companion to DAWs. Yamaha has built an impressive amount of DAW interfacing into it, especially for Digidesign's Pro Tools. It includes full control of mixing and processing parameters, as well as transport/track-arming control and access to editing functions, directly from the DM2000 control surface.
Support for Steinberg's Nuendo DAW is under development. The DM2000 also features 24-bit, 96 kHz processing, including for effects; 96 channels; and advanced surround production. For more info, visit Yamaha's web site.

2. Nuendo Presentation (3pm) & User Group Meeting (7pm), February 4
*******************************************************
Acceptance of Steinberg's Nuendo by discerning professional users has been phenomenal. On Tuesday, February 4, Faydi Hayek of Steinberg will be in our Demonstration Room to present the system. The 3pm session will be for anyone interested in Nuendo. The 7pm session will be a User Group Meeting, for current Nuendo owners and users. Of particular interest at both sessions will be version 2.0 software, a major upgrade. For more info, visit the Steinberg web site. RSVP.

3. Digidesign Events: Pro Tools 6 Presentations, and a User Group Meeting
**********************************************************
On Tuesday, February 11 and Wednesday, March 12, at 4 & 7pm, Brian Doser of Digidesign will present Pro Tools 6 in our Demonstration Room. RSVP. On Wednesday, March 19, at 4 and 7pm, he and we will host User Group Meeting for Digidesign workstation owners and operators. Pro Tools 6, which is shipping from the factory this month, is a major evolutionary step. It supports Apple's OS X operating system, providing improved, solid interaction between the Pro Tools environment and Power Mac G4s. It brings a new look to the Mix, Edit, and Transport windows, making the most user-friendly Pro Tools software environment yet. Also new: multi-user login functionality, the DigiBase file management utility, enhanced MIDI functionality (including hi-res groove templates), additional Beat Detective features, new Import Session options, plug-in functionality enhancements, MachineControl additions, and more. See further details at the Digidesign web site.

4. Golden Ears Audio Ear Training Seminar, February 27, 7-10pm
*************************************************
The January 30 Golden Ears Seminar sold out in less than 24 hours. We have added a second session. It will take place in our Demonstration Room from 7-10pm on Thursday, February 27. Again, class size is limited to 12 people. Tuition is $100, $50 of which can be applied towards purchase of Golden Ears training CD's, which we sell here at Parsons. This will be the last Golden Ears offering for at least five or six months.

In case you missed the course description in our recent newsletter: Golden Ears Audio Ear Training is Dave Moulton’s own inimitable introduction to systematically developing your hearing to discriminate frequency bands, loudness, spectrum, EQ, reverb, and other audio phenomena. Using the Golden Ears CD set, Dave will take you through a series of listening drills. The Seminar is an invaluable aid to anyone who works with audio. It enables your ears to really work for you when making or evaluating recordings, doing sound reinforcement, or doing any other audio work. The course has been taken by everyone from established professionals (e.g., NPR, Harvard, WGBH, Bose Corp., hundreds of studio engineers and producers, etc.) to relative beginners (students at Berklee, Univ. of Mass./Lowell, The Hartt School, Full Sail, etc.). In addition to being the creator of the Golden Ears CD series, Dave is a noted author, columnist (Recording magazine, TV Technology, etc.), teacher, loudspeaker designer, and engineer (w/Grammy nomination).

5. Apple Computer
***************
Apple Computer was here a few days last week to train our staff. We can inform and advise you re Apple hardware and software. We have Final Cut Pro here, and will soon be able to demo it. Also Cinema Tools, and DVD Studio Pro. One of the new Powerbook G4's introduced at MacWorld last week brings desktop power (1GB) and screen size (17") to a portable Mac -- excellent for professional work in audio, video or both. For details about Apple products, contact us, and visit the Apple site.
